Crochet Gary the Snail Opossum
A few days ago, I posted a picture on my Instagram story of an incomplete crochet possum body that was light blue in color. I asked my followers to guess what I was making, based on the image alone. I got a lot of guesses, such as, “Smurf Posm,” “Sonic the possum!!,” “ratsune miku,” “Yeti posm?,” “Squidward,” “Blueberry posm?,” and “light blue posm.” There were some very good guesses in the question box, but as you can probably tell by the title of this blog post, none of them guessed correctly, although “Squidward” was pretty close.
I made a Gary the Snail Possum from Spongebob! I am super happy with how the result came out. The thing I like the most about it is the fact that you can see Gary by himself if you ignore all of the possum parts. Here are some images of the Gary Posm:
If you bought the “Posm Crochet Pattern” from my shop and you want to make this, I have provided the crochet pattern below.
Posm Color Changes:
BODY: Make the face white. Make the body light blue where it tells you to make gray.
FEET: Make the feet light pink like you normally would.
LEGS: Replace black with light green. Replace gray with light blue.
TAIL: Replace both the pink and the black portion of the tail with light green, and replace the gray with light blue.
EARS: Make the ears light purple.
Other than color changes, the Posm Pattern is exactly the same, and you can complete the entire Posm before adding the Gary parts.

FO, leave a very long tail for sewing.
Sewing it onto the back:
Lead the tail into Rnd 21, where you front post single crocheted.
Start crocheting directly in between Rnds 21 and 22 of the Posm’s body. Sew 6 stitches across the top, making sure to align the shell in the middle of the top of the body. Then, sew the shell 12 stitches down the sides, making sure to sew as straight and even as possible. Sew 6 stitches across the bottom of the body, this should be close to the base of the tail and my stitches ended up in between Rnds 33 and 34 of the Posm’s body. It is OK if yours is not exactly like mine. Then, sew 12 more stitches on the other side of the body, eventually meeting up with the first sewing stitch you made in the front. Tie off and weave in the ends.
Take some red yarn and surface crochet on each side of the shell, making a spiral.
Take some purple yarn and sew in some purple spots above the red spiral. The spots are made the same way the eyes of the Posm are made, but I wrapped around 10 times so that they come out bigger than the eyes.
Eye Stalks (3mm Crochet Hook)
(Light Green Yarn)
Rnd 1. Ch 2 and Sc 6 in the first chain (6)
Rnd 2. Inc 6 times (12)
Rnd 3-5. Sc around 3 rounds (12)
Rnd 6. Dec 6 times (6)
(Change to light blue yarn, stuff the piece)
Rnd 7-21. Sc around 15 rounds
(Change to white yarn)
Rnd 22. [Sc 2, Inc 1]x2 (8)
FO, leave a tail for sewing.
I put a bent piece of pipe cleaner in the stalks to add stability. This is optional.
Sew the stalks onto the face. They are placed 1 stitch away from the widows peak, 1 stitch away from the color change from white to blue on the head, and 2 stitches away from the eyes. They are sewn on in a square shape, with 2 stitches placed on each side of the square, which totals in 8 sewing stitches.
Once the eye stalks are sewn on, take some red yarn and sew on pupils. They are made the same way the Posm’s eyes are made.
That’s it! That is all you have to add to make a Gary the Snail Posm!
